The 9th Annual Association for Contemplative Mind in Higher Education Conference, “Radicalizing Contemplative Education: Compassion, Intersectionality, and Justice in Challenging Times,” will explore different ways contemplative approaches to inquiry and learning can further justice and increase compassion in higher education and the world.
Through interactive keynote presentations, dynamic concurrent sessions, and a powerful poster session, this conference investigates radical transformations on multiple levels–self, classroom, higher education, and community. In bringing together diverse networks of teachers, scholars, administrators, practitioners, students, and community activists, the conference will be a landmark event in furthering a contemplatively grounded, socially just educational vision.
We’re seeking proposals from educators at all points of their journey, and welcoming new perspectives on supporting personal, institutional and systemic change through contemplative education and social justice. We are especially interested in engaging in inquiry and contemplative practices that center social justice and the examination of power, privilege, intersectionality, and oppressive structures as they relate to current societal challenges.
The conference will be an inquiry into the fundamental nature of education, contemplation, and justice and the ways they interact. Faculty, staff, students, researchers, and administrators from all sectors of academia are encouraged to submit proposals for concurrent sessions, posters, or both. We seek presenters who model contemplative pedagogy and method in their sessions, and we are particularly interested in proposals emphasizing the integration of contemplative education in the contexts of teaching and learning, student affairs, and leadership.
Presentation proposals might address questions such as:
- How do contemplative practices deepen our capacities to bear witness to each other’s lived experiences and work together to build more compassionate and just communities?
- How do contemplative approaches help us understand privilege and empower us to work to transform oppressive structures and processes of exclusion on campus and beyond?
- How can a contemplative social justice pedagogy facilitate a deep unlearning of dehumanizing ideologies and practices, a healing from the trauma of injustice, and a deeper ability to sit with the discomfort of that process in order to cultivate more liberatory ways of being with one another?
- How can student affairs professionals employ contemplative approaches to foster deep inquiry and to cultivate personal transformation, as well as social, emotional and inner life competencies necessary for students to face contemporary societal challenges?
- How can forms of leadership and activism be deepened and strengthened by integrating contemplative pedagogies, particularly in social justice work?
- With the evident exponential increase of technology in our lives, what role can contemplative practices play in helping our society develop more harmonious patterns of consumption that prioritize individual and collective wellbeing?
- Professionals from all areas of higher education, including faculty, students, staff, and administrators, are invited to submit proposals for consideration.
- Presenters must be ACMHE members, or must join the ACMHE before the conference date. Members receive a $50 discount on the conference registration fee.
- Proposals must indicate a session type: practice, interactive, or poster. Please refer to the session descriptions for more information.
- Proposals must describe the planned structure of their session, such as the use of visuals, materials, interactive practices or exercises, Q & A/discussion, etc
- The submission deadline for parallel sessions was Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at midnight EDT (-04:00 UTC).
- The submission deadline for the poster session is Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at midnight EDT (-04:00 UTC).
- Proposals will be reviewed and selected by the conference committee.
How should I design my parallel session?
We encourage those presenting all types of parallel sessions (interactive, practice, and 30-minute) to model their session(s) on their own practice, modes of teaching, or styles of engagement with faculty, staff, and students. Basic tech/AV (projector, screen and audio) equipment will be available in all of the conference breakout rooms. We invite presenters to employ a variety of teaching and learning practices. Alternatives to fully PowerPoint-dependent presentations are encouraged.
What is the poster session like? Is tech/AV available?
Poster sessions occur simultaneously in a large, shared space. Though tech/AV are not available for poster sessions, past poster presenters have included small, brief interactive elements and handouts in addition to dialogue with attendees to create an engaging experience.
60-Minute Interactive Sessions allow opportunities for presenters to share research and methodologies in ways that engage the session participants and model contemplative modes of inquiry. They may feature one or more lead presenters incorporating a variety of interactive methods (dialogue, guided discussion, etc.), and we encourage alternatives to lecture-style presenting. Interactive sessions may also take the form of a roundtable discussion in which the organizer proposes a concept, approach, or issue, and participants are invited to share in an open inquiry. Audio-visual equipment, including digital projector and screen, may be requested.
60-Minute Practice Sessions focus on particular practices and invite participants to experience them as designed or adapted for educational settings, allowing time for discussion. We encourage a full variety of practices from stillness to movement, silence to sound, interpersonal to intrapersonal, etc.
Poster Presentations offer an opportunity to speak collaboratively with a large number of colleagues and display some aspects of your work visually on a poster. We envision this poster session as a dynamic gathering, leading to synthesis of ideas from across the diverse group of participants. Each poster presenter will be supplied with a 3′x4′ poster board. Posters are presented simultaneously in a one-hour session. No audio-visual equipment is available for Poster Presentations.
30-Minute Sessions offer an opportunity for speakers to share research, academic papers, conceptual frameworks, case studies and community-based projects that address contemplative pedagogy and social justice in teaching and learning, student affairs, and leadership.
